SUN VALLEY, ID, Feb. 2, 2013 – Known for blending river rafting with wilderness adventure and back-country luxury, Far and Away Adventures delivers “authentic American safaris” that in 2013 include two six-day/five-night Middle Fork of the Salmon Whitewater Wellness Week.  Trip date is Sept. 5 – 10. In an adults-only atmosphere, private wellness and fitness counseling and
activities will be led by Margie Caldwell Cooper, a fitness educator, relaxation
trainer and former competitive swimmer from Santa Barbara, CA, who was
designated Aquatic Exercise Association Global Fitness Professional of the Year
in 2006.

In a pristine riverside setting, Caldwell will introduce new and advanced stretching techniques and lead daily warm-up and yoga sessions before each active day on the river. Morning guided hikes along the banks or up a canyon to enjoy scenery and view petroglyphs increase participant’s endurance and
cardiovascular fitness. Personalized stretch sessions and kinesthetic awareness
activities drawn up by Caldwell after individual assessments will give each guest a specific individualized program for improved posture and increased flexibility and range of motion. Massage and bodywork sessions in the ambiance of the quiet river evenings will loosen joints and lengthen muscles, improving posture
and balance.

Far and Away Adventures hopes to appeal to active couples and solo travelers looking to combine a world-class adventure vacation with a strong wellness element.  Owner and founder Steve Lentz likes to point out that, “this is also prime time for fly-fishing on legendary blue ribbon waters.  A companion who would rather angle for Westslope Cutthroat Trout will be well accommodated.”  Lentz notes that an experienced angler can bring 100 fish a day to the boat.

The comprehensive program in concert with a world-class river expedition includes aerobic interval workouts, fly-fishing, soaking in hot springs, wildlife
observation and nature walks, inflatable kayaking, and development of long term personal fitness agendas. Exercise mats are provided. Additional massage
treatments (one is complimentary) are $50 per half hour and $90 per hour.

Caldwell, a self-proclaimed river rat herself, holds numerous certifications from the Yoga Alliance and teaches Yoga and Pilates. She also freelances at the
Rancho La Puerta health spa in Baja, Mexico on a regular basis and offers continuing education to instructors around the country focusing on bringing core training and functional fitness into every workout.

As guests work out with Caldwell and play on the river, adventure guides set up and break down five-star camps along the river. They prepare and serve organic
meals on pre-heated stoneware atop linen-draped tables lit by candlelight while pouring into crystal stemware wines selected from organic and small-batch
wineries. The guides also arrange solar-generated hot water for showers, and state-of-art tents with elevated beds, flannel bedding, carpets and nightstands.

Imagine that you could have gone with me and 21 other Texans on a recent raft trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho.  you would have experienced something like this:  You fly from Austin, to Salt Lake City, to Sun Valley, ID, with your Texas amigos and amigas in vacation party mode.  You drive to near by Ketchum, ID, make an historic liquor store run, and raise a little heck in town.  Next morning, you get on a small bus and drive two hours to Stanley ID, where you load onto a small propeller aircraft for the flight into the largest wilderness area in the lower 48.  You make a barnstorming landing on a dirt strip in a canyon, right beside the Middle Fork.  You meet the raft crew for Far & Away, all of whom will soon become your friends on a first-name basis.  You load up in rafts.  If you choose, you might ride an inflatable kayak called a “ducky.”  You float the river, stop to eat lunch, shoot rapids, stop to jump off a cliff into crystal-clear cold water, warm up in a hot spring, see evidence of ancient Shoshone villages.  You arrive at your campground to find the camp set up, complete with your tent and cot, a full bar, a large dining table, and a kitchen.  You wonder how in the heck the crew can prepare food that rivals a 5-star restaurant in this beautiful mountain wilderness area.  You listen to campfire music, with guitars and mandolin.  You find out the crew members play and sing, too.  Every night will be like this, at every camp.  Day two , a crew member brings a warm, moist washcloth to your tent to help you wake up.  Full breakfast, more rapids, more fun.  You find time to fly-fish, and catch a dozen trout, catch-and-release.  You begin to loose track of what day of the week it is, and don’t care to remember.  Day three, your trip organizer, Susan, uses her satellite phone to have another case of tequila flown in to the last airstrip you’ll pass on the river.  You howl at the moon at night.  The guides howl the loudest!  You forget there’s a world beyond this canyon..  You might enjoy a massage by the crew’s massage therapist, who also guides one of the oar boats.  You forge life-long friendships.  At camp, you tell jokes, raise toasts, recite poetry, sing songs, dance.  You eat and drink well.  You might arrive at a new understanding, adopt a new philosophy, or even change your entire life.  You might break down and weep.  You might hear spirits, see faces in the rock walls of canyons.  You don’t want it to end….. and it doesn’t.  It stays with you when you leave the river.  You carry it home.  It’s part of you now.  You understand why your crew members live this way, season upon season.  You thank the Shoshone spirits for sharing their sacred canyon.  You’ll never be quite the same.

Of all the reasons you would go to Idaho—potatoes, your irrational love of blue-turf football fields, getting lost on the way to Montana—we think there’s one you might have overlooked.

Two words: riverside massage…

Welcome to Far and Away Adventures’ American Safari, a new tour of the Idahoan wild lands, taking reservations now.

If Ernest Hemingway had preferred white-water rafting (and the occasional back rub) to shooting elephants, he would have vacationed here. You’ll tip them off ahead of time about a few things that might interest you—beer, wine, golfing, playing horseshoes, fly-fishing, mountain biking, massages, tennis… but sadly no potato farming.

Your American safari would not be complete, however, without white-water rafting down the Salmon River, fly-fishing in same and camping either under the stars or in a stand-up tent. (Given it includes real beds, steamed towels, a shower and rugs, we’re not sure it technically qualifies as a tent.) The whole while, you’ll also have access to a personal concierge, who can arrange a quick dip in nearby hot springs, the aforementioned riverside massage or a white-tablecloth dinner alongside the river (possibly featuring the fish you caught earlier).

You never dine in Idaho without a white tablecloth.
